Music Shouldn’t Fund War

(Inspired by Deerhoof’s decision to leave Spotify – Pitchfork, June 2025)

When Deerhoof announced they were leaving Spotify, protesting CEO Daniel Ek’s military investments, I felt something shift. As Mitxoda, I make music to heal, to question, to reconnect, certainly not to fuel conflict. Knowing that the platforms we rely on might be funding war machinery is more than unsettling. It’s heartbreaking.

I’ve always believed music holds a different power, a human, fragile, resistant one. I’m not here for numbers or algorithms. I’m here for truth, nuance, and connection. Deerhoof’s decision reminds me that being indie means being in a position. A line you draw when the world gets blurry.

So this isn’t just their fight, it touches me too. It reinforces why I do things the way I do. Slow. Conscious. Honest. If my music ever travels far, I want it to carry peace, not profit from violence.
