There is a particular kind of kindness in remembering something somebody told you weeks ago.
SFSF remembered Maison Vide. She remembered the empty house behind the song. In a message sent from Berlin, after speaking about my dedication to indie artists and the relationships growing around the Salon, she wondered whether that house might feel a little less empty now.
I keep coming back to that thought.
The house where I grew up had to be emptied after my mother’s death. Turning part of that experience into music took time. Sharing the song meant letting people into something difficult to explain. And now a friend, some distance away, had taken that story with her and sent a little care back.
That is quite a journey for a song.
When a song becomes a relationship
Her message also returned to something I had said on the radio about her and Berlos Band: how a visit, the decision to travel and meet, can change the nature of a musical friendship.
We discover a track. We exchange a few words. We begin to recognise the person behind it. Perhaps we meet. Eventually, when their name appears, it comes with a face, a conversation, a memory.
I love seeing that happen around the Salon.
An independent artist spends a great deal of time sending things into the world without knowing quite where they land. A song goes out. A message waits for a reply. A release day passes. Hearing that somebody actually made room for the music can matter enormously.
I’ve been on both sides of that exchange. This week, I was grateful to be reminded how much receiving that warmth can mean.
Elizabeth Duchess, travelling with me
I had recently written about Elizabeth Duchess and her wonderful historical podcast world, The Cabinet of Curiosities. Her voice keeps me company on the métro, taking my attention somewhere much stranger than the next station.
The episode I shared was “The Really Disturbing Tale Of The Madness of Queen Joanne”, from The Old Bit on the Side, the investigative sister show to The Cabinet of Curiosities.
The recommendation led to a lovely exchange. Liz said how wonderful it was to imagine herself travelling with me. And yes, that is exactly what a voice can do. Somebody records a story in one place, and suddenly they are beside you on an ordinary journey through your own city.

You might find comfort in a beautiful melody. You might find it in a familiar voice telling a very unsettling story. My ears appear happy to make room for both.
The microphone had its own ideas
Last Friday, episode 75 – Numbers are numbers came with a microphone that really let me down.
There were excellent artists in that selection, and I wish the technical side had done them better justice. “Shame on me,” with a small embarrassed bow from behind the desk.
I still want you to meet those songs. The episode page brings together the replay and the full tracklist, with room to spend a little longer with the artists.

A few things to bring in from the rain
There is plenty of music waiting this week. These introductions draw on the release information and notes the artists supplied.
🇺🇸 Glass Rabbit — Damn Shame
An intimate guitar-and-vocal fragment becomes a song of dreamy beginnings and more urgent post-punk release.
🇮🇳 Rainburn — confessions
Regret, guilt and the question of being remembered, from a concept album rooted in a near-death experience at sea.
🇮🇪 Taylor D — Obsession
A rock single from Taylor D’s four-track EP BAD DECISIONS, released October 2.
🇩🇪🇫🇷 pilotinthepicture — Run
A song about fleeing, unequal starting points and what happens to people seeking safety in Europe.
🇨🇦 Elektrik Ghosts — A Very Scary Halloween
A seasonal pop detour from Franklin McKay’s project, explicitly presented by its creator as an AI alter ego.
🇨🇦 Crystal Eyes — Pretending To Be People
Presence, intimacy and recognising what is in front of us: the first single from Secret Oscillator.
🇫🇷🇮🇪 Orchid Orchid — Hollow
A propulsive bass line meets emotional distance, introducing Life Is a Party, announced for October 9.
🇺🇸 JoDan Music — The Puzzle of Your Life
A life imagined as a puzzle, in a brief rock story with progressive ambitions.
🇺🇸 Alex Sitze — fresco fiasco
Art, imitation and authenticity: a song offered to the fakers and the truthers alike.
🇺🇸 Gizmosophy — four songs, a little room to breathe
Faith For Gold · I Feel Betrayed · Ocean at Night · Eastbound Greyhound
Gizmosophy introduces four down-tempo reckonings with bad trades, broken promises, places of peace and a stranger at a bus station who was never forgotten. The shared description finds its hopeful turn in the promises we can still keep to ourselves.
🇺🇸 Ataraxia Music — GOTHAM TOO!
Rock guitar, strings and timpani in a playful Halloween return to the world of Joker and Batman.
Meet me in the Salon
Friday, October 9, at 4 PM Brussels time, I’ll be back on OTAT247, hosting in French, with SFSF, Rainburn, Glass Rabbit, Sonophagen and Liva among the artists joining us.
A few familiar names, a few new encounters, and some discoveries I’ll leave for the live show. Bring a friend. Somewhere in that selection, there may be a song you’ll want to send to somebody afterwards.

And before you go: which song, voice or message has brought you a little comfort lately? Tell me in the comments below. You can leave a recommendation for the next person who comes in from the rain.
Love, on all of you.

Zoltán, to answer your question: the voice that brought me comfort lately was yours, in Episode 75. The microphone may have let you down, but the words got through. You introduced “Te vas con él (chanson)” as a world premiere, and today the song is finally out. Those words stayed with me. That is what the Salon does: someone takes the time to say “I heard you.” Thank you. 🎶
Esas palabras me quedaron. Eso es lo que hace el Salon: alguien se toma el tiempo de decir «te escuché». Gracias. 🎶
