WeTransfer’s New Terms of Service Are a Serious Threat to Artists, Starting August 8, 2025 (UPDATE)

Artists, creators, indie producers, this is not a drill.

Starting August 8, 2025, WeTransfer will update its Terms of Service to include a new clause (6.3) that could put your copyrights, privacy, and even your livelihood at risk.

UPDATE (15/07/2025, 21.53): Things are moving quickly. This change triggered an unprecedented backlash against WeTransfer.

They have now backtracked, following coverage by the BBC.

*****

What does this clause say?

It gives WeTransfer a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable license on all files you upload through their platform.

In other words, your images, videos, music, documents, texts, and other content may be:

  • Copied
  • Modified
  • Distributed
  • Used to train AI models
  • And even sold

…without your knowledge, permission, or compensation.

⚠️ What are the risks?

  • Total loss of control over your creative work
  • 💸 Legal liability if others reuse your content
  • 🤝 Broken trust with clients or collaborators

✅ What you should do now

  • Stop using WeTransfer for any sensitive or original content
  • 📢 Inform your network (clients, designers, producers, partners…)
  • 🔁 Switch to more ethical alternatives such as:

🇨🇭 SwissTransfer
🇫🇷 Smash (France)
🇧🇪 Blip (Belgium)

💡 Why is this happening?

Because data is the new oil, and artists are the wells. By rewriting their terms, WeTransfer is legally grabbing your work to feed the AI industry without fair compensation or transparency.

This is silent exploitation, legalized by fine print.

My advice: Protect your art

We often say: “Support indie artists”

Now it’s time for artists to support themselves, and each other.

Say no to platforms that exploit your creativity.
Say yes to those that respect it.

Don’t let your work become just another training dataset for commercial AI models.
