The Hero’s Journey in Six Movements: Inside My EP Prognosis

When I composed Prognosis, I wasn’t merely sequencing six songs—I was mapping a rite of passage. Each track captures a pivotal moment on a path that winds from naïve longing to hard-won dawn. Here’s the narrative thread that binds the EP together.

1. Les Prémices du Désir — “The Dawn of Longing”

The record opens in a hush: a single guitar-harmonics pattern shimmering like distant stars. Over it, my vocal whispers of first, tremulous desire. The lyrics (“Dans le silence de la nuit, une voix murmure…”) plant the seed of yearning; musically, suspended chords refuse to resolve, hinting that completion lies far ahead. It’s the instant just before an adventure chooses you.

2. La Quête — “The Quest”

A bright, syncopated groove kicks in—footsteps on a golden road. As the lyric strides (“Sur le chemin doré de nos rêves, nous marchons, audacieux”), guitars and synths trade call-and-response riffs, echoing two inner voices urging me on. The section is lit up by the splendid voice of Caroline Dorian, who glides in with airy harmonies on the second verse and doubles the chorus lines, turning the journey into a shared vision. With every chorus the key nudges higher, the horizon endlessly receding.

3. La Tentation — “Temptation”

I intentionally jolt the listener here: shifting to 5/4 time unsettles the body while the words flirt with forbidden power (“une flamme tentatrice”). A serpentine bass line mirrors the lure; subtle dissonances in the chorus foreshadow the cost. It’s the moral crossroads—seductive, dangerous, irresistible.

4. La Chute — “The Fall”

Down-tuned guitars drop the floor out from under the mix. Reverb-laden vocals narrate the plunge (“Sous le poids des choix, le sol se dérobe”), and a fractured drum loop mimics ground crumbling beneath my feet. Just before the long, storm-clearing piano solo, Caroline Dorian returns as a featured artist, layering an ethereal vocal lament that hovers like a final warning flare. A single, detuned piano note rings at the end—a sonic mirror held to my errors.

5. La Liberté — “Deliverance”

A lone spark rises: finger-picked acoustic and a distant choir. The climb back begins slowly—literally, the BPM ramps up measure by measure. By the final chorus (“Pas à pas, l’ascension commence”), the arrangement blossoms into full-band catharsis, major chords flooding in like first light through prison bars.

6. La Nouvelle Aube — “New Dawn”

I close on a panoramic swell: layered guitars, strings, and hand-claps that feel like communal celebration. Here there’s no triumphant key change; instead I speak the words—more storyteller than singer—letting the raw timbre of the human voice carry the sunrise imagery (“Au-delà des montagnes, le soleil se lève”). After the final hit, eight seconds of quiet tape hiss remain: space for you to breathe and decide where your own story goes next.

Stepping Back

Prognosis is a diagnosis and a forecast, a map of possible futures etched in melody. May these six movements offer both a mirror for your darkest nights and a compass pointing toward brighter horizons.

Cue it up, close your eyes, and let the journey begin.
